Arundel Castle was built by the Normans to protect that vulnerable point to the north of the valley through the South Downs. The town later grew up on the slope below the castle to the south.
Arundel Castle was the seat of the Duke of Norfolk. One of them was the 11th Duke of Norfolk, Charles Howard, who was a real rich stinker. He was so smelly that his servants got him dronk to be able to wash him. He was also called the Dirty Duke. Norfolk died on 16 December 1815 at age 69
He spent a considerable amount of his money rebuilding and refurbishing Arundel Castle after inheriting his title and lands.
