Here on this rocky coast you can find coastal notches, also called "brandingskelen" in Dutch.
It is a recess or indentation at the base of a coastal cliff, formed by the continuous action of surf (waves) wearing away the rocks.
Sometimes you also find them at higher altitudes and then you have an indication of uplift.
Underwater coastal notches are somewhat more difficult to observe. These refer to subsidence or tectonic subsidence. Subsidence (also called downreit in some contexts) is the process by which the Earth's surface actually sinks or subsides.
