Start at the free parking lot of the archaeological site.

Although only the temple and theater are the only visible remains of the archaeological site of Segesta, it is worth doing the full walk. It is interesting to consult the explanation of the other sights that have been transformed into ruins. The information, supplemented with animation, gives a very good idea of how the old city has evolved over time.

The climb to the theater is quite tough , especially in warm weather. It is possible to take a shuttle bus to the theater for an additional fee. It may be a good idea to do the outward journey by bus and the descent on foot , where you will be treated to a beautiful view of the temple.

We start with the climb to the temple, one of the rare examples of Doric temples that never collapsed. It is worthwhile to read through the theories surrounding the discussion about whether or not this temple is finished ...

After the visit to the temple, the climb to the top of Monte Barbaro awaits, on foot or by shuttle bus. Along the way there is a beautiful view over the valley with the temple on the top of the hill.

We pass the ruins of the Bouleuterion, a covered theater where the "Bulé", the civil council, met. A little further on, only an open space reminds of the Stoa, once an imposing space on large picturesque terraces, surrounded on three sides by colonnades (stoai).

The ruins of the medieval Friday Mosque, castle and Chiesa di San Leone are nearby.

A little further on lies the second highlight of the visit and one of the best preserved Greek theaters in the world, still used for cultural events.

When descending, we first come to Casa Rupestre, a typical house from the 6th century BC, partly carved into the rocks.

Finally, we arrive at the Porte di Valle which granted natural access to the old town through the lower defensive wall, protected by two towers.

This city walk is part of a series of city walks and tours that depart from Balestrate and Sambucco di Sicilia and are described in

"Discover all the sights of western Sicily through day trips"

Be sure to consult the information about the sights once you are there . They explain what you will see!
