High Route of the Lanzo Valleys (Avl)

The itinerary for experienced hikers ALTA VIA DELLE VALLI DI LANZO (AVL) is a crossing in high mountains (2200-3200 m above sea level) that winds through the Southern Graian Alps, along the border between Italy and France, from the slopes of Levanna Orientale (3555 m), skirting all the majestic peaks that reach 3500 m, until reaching Rocciamelone (3538 m). The route has an overall length of about 47 km (52 with the variant to Colle della Piccola), divided into six stages, and takes place almost entirely on marked paths or trails. Although it does not present any particular climbing difficulties, the route is classified as EE (Experienced Hikers) due to the harsh high mountain environment in which it takes place: an environment that becomes even more challenging in non-optimal weather conditions and in the presence of snow or fog. Some sections of the route are particularly exposed and require good skills, a sure foot, and an absence of vertigo. In some of them, where possible, there are supports for assistance. Hikers should take special care to always check the functioning and stability of these elements before securing themselves to them. Therefore, adequate preparation, suitable equipment, and good physical training are required to undertake the itinerary. The departure can take place from the hamlet of Forno Alpi Graie to the north, following the route southward, concluding at Malciaussia or in the opposite direction. In both cases, there is the possibility to interrupt the journey through downhill connections from intermediate stages, particularly halfway at Pian della Mussa. The stopover places are located in the shelters, which are guarded during the summer season and equipped with winter rooms that are always open. For some stopover points, there are only bivouacs, which are also always open. The optimal period to undertake the route is from late June to early September. The main access points are: to the north, the hamlet of Forno Alpi Graie in the Municipality of Groscavallo, to the south, the location of Malciaussia in the Municipality of Usseglio, and in between, the location of Pian della Mussa in the Municipality of Balme, all approximately 60 km from Turin.
