A bridge has been here for centuries. City architect Daniël Stalpaert already drew a bridge in his design map of 1662, as it was planned during the city expansion, but at that time there were no buildings marked here, and the construction of the bridge was not going ahead for the time being. Jacob Bosch’s map for the fourth expansion therefore shows no bridge. Also, in a painting by Gerrit Berckheyde from 1685, there is still no bridge visible. Frederik de Wit did draw a bridge with several arches on his map from 1688. When Gerrit de Broen made his map in 1737, he included a bridge with nine arches. He referred to it as Kerk Straats or Magere Brug.
