The Kloveniersburgwal was dug at the end of the 15th century, from the Sint Antoniespoort (now Waag at the Nieuwmarkt) to the south, where it flowed into the Amstel. Next to the canal was the city wall. After the Nieuwe Gracht (the current Oudeschans) was dug and new city walls were built, the Kloveniersburgwal lost its function as a defensive canal. The old city wall was demolished and houses were built. You can still see many beautiful examples around the Zuiderkerk.
