The historic Fortress Hellevoetsluis was built in the early 17th century. Hellevoetsluis was the first naval base of the Lands Admiralty.
Piet Heyn's Silver Fleet was brought ashore here and then transported in triumph along the cities of Holland to Amsterdam.
The Fortress has largely retained its historic state, but also houses interesting and well-fitted new buildings.
Historic are the Tromphuys and jet (Michiel de) Ruyterhuys, the Cruyttoren and the Jan Blanken Dock (a unique dry dock).
