Groot-Ammers is first mentioned in history in 1042. Liesvelt Castle, built at that time, was one of the largest and strongest castles in the Netherlands. The castle was the property of the lords of Liesvelt. The area of Groot-Ammers, the Hinterland, Graafland, Peulwijk, Ottoland and Peursum was under the influence of these gentlemen.
In 1636 Willem-Frederik van Nassau, stadtholder of Friesland, bought the barony of Liesvelt. For this reason, our Queen can call herself Baroness van Liesvelt.
