Former railway station Maarn

For the construction of the Rhijn railway Amsterdam – Utrecht – Arnhem, part of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug was excavated between 1838 and 1845. On 15 March 1845, the section of the railway line between Driebergen and Veenendaal was opened. The literature is not unanimous about the commissioning of the Maarn staging area. Sometimes the above date is found and elsewhere 1875 is mentioned. Be that as it may, only the first and last train of the day stopped in Maarn on request. In 1895 the staging area was extended with a small stop building on both sides of the rails. The main building was expanded again in 1910. From that moment on, Maarn station included a service house, rooms for the station service, a staff room, water reservoir, turntable, coal storage, three signal boxes and a large yard. The hall had ticket offices and two waiting rooms: one for first and second class passengers and one for third class passengers. At this time, the station had about 100 employees. On the gables you can still read the text 'MAARN' on red-yellow tiles. The station is 52.8 km from Amsterdam. On May 16, 1972, a new station in the center of Maarn was opened more than one kilometer away and this station was repurposed. As a result, the tunnel from the Bergweg under the highway and the railway also lost its significance. At the beginning of this century, the NS restored the station building to its original state.
