Salandse Heuvelrug rolling hills partly Pieterspad

Overijssel has the Sallandse Heuvelrug. A robust, rolling landscape where steep sandy paths wind through the vast heath. Fabulous! In the coming years, hard work will be done here to restore nature to its prime. Dogs are allowed on a leash.

N.B. The map shows the SHORT route (13 km); outside of the breeding season, you can also walk the LONG variant of this route (6 km longer, 18 km), follow the instructions in the route description.

Sheep herd Twilhaar

Sheepfold Twilhaar is the permanent home of a herd of about 600 - 700 sheep that graze away the grasses that invade the heath. Recently, the herd has been guarded at night by several beautiful Pyrenean mountain dogs. With their thick white fur, they seem sweet and cuddly, but they are not. After all, they must not only herd sheep but also keep wolves at bay. Whether the wolf is already roaming here is unclear. But it is welcome.

Rijks labour camp Twilhaar

This site housed the Rijks labour camp Twilhaar from 1940-1947, a work project for unemployed men. They reclaimed the wild land and created paths through the forests and over the heath. During World War II, Jews were also employed here, many of whom were deported and never returned. Let us not forget, these bronze frames with portraits of Jewish men ask.
