The Korenburgerveen hiking trail near Winterswijk takes you over the remains of a swamp area that once stretched over a large part of the Achterhoek and adjacent Germany.

The walk starts in a forest planted on former drifting sand. The soil is sandy and therefore nutrient-poor. In the past, only heather wanted to grow on it. Due to overgrazing and masking, the heath disappeared and eventually drifting sand was created. Because drifting sand yields nothing, oaks and Scots pines were planted a century ago. The hills and the juniper berries - a real drifting sand plant - still show the drifting sand past. For a long time, things did not go so well with the Korenburgerveen. The peat dried up and nutrient-rich water flowed into the peat. Thanks to support from third parties, Natuurmonumenten took measures together with partners. With good results: come and see!
