The Alameda de S. Dâmaso has a central garden with benches, ideal for taking a break in the shade of the leafy trees or simply watching the daily life of the city.
It is a great place to be and socialise, taking on a different setting each season, with bare trees in winter, letting the sun shine in, and full of cool shadows in summer.
The garden has a beautiful bandstand , which is still used today mainly for musical performances, and two figures sculpted in bronze : the "Faun" and the "Little Girl", pieces by the notable sculptor António Ferreira de Azevedo.
Further on, in the last part of the garden, we see the monument that pays tribute to Gil Vicente , who was born in Guimarães in the mid-15th century and is considered the first great Portuguese playwright , as well as a renowned poet, known throughout the country as "the father of Portuguese theatre". The monument, entitled "500 Years of Portuguese Theatre", by sculptor Irene Vilar, was inaugurated in 2003 and has seven masks evoking a dramatic representation, displayed on two shelves.
