Mouth of Khlong Mueang

The Lopburi River, borrowing its name from the ancient city of Lopburi, is one of the three tributaries of the Chao Phraya River, the others being the Noi and Ta Chin (Suphanburi) Rivers. The river hast its origin in Bang Phutsa (Sing Buri) and runs over Lopburi South to Ayutthaya. North of Ayutthaya it ran through the Pho Sam Ton Fields towards Hua Ro, the northeastern tip of Ayutthaya, where it ran west towards Hua Laem and further encircled the city. When the Chao Phraya River was deviated towards Ayutthaya in 1857, the Lopburi River bed was cut short near Hua Leam by the first. The river bed between Hua Ro and Hua Laem became silted after the barrage at Hua Ro was destroyed during the war with the Burmese in 1767. Finally the Lopburi River found a new river bed north of Wat Muang in Pho Sam Ton, by running into Khlong Ko Loeng and descending towards Wat Tong Pu. The silted track became known as Khlong Mueang or City Canal.

Ayutthaya Historical Research
