This part of the Mekong River is believed to be the deepest part of the river and the large whirlpool active during the rainy season from about June to September is called the Navel of the Mekong. The river depth is 196 metres. Legend has it that at the Navel of the Mekong lies a cave located underneath a rock on the Laos side. This cave is opposite Wat A-Hong Silawat and is the Mekong giant catfish's habitat, as well as, the Naga's rendezvous at the end of the Buddhist Lent. The contested "naga fireballs" also known as "Mekong lights" were first reported in this area.
