The Chai Nat - Ayutthaya canal was part of a post-Chao Phraya Project becoming operational in 1962. The trunk canal running along the high left bank of the Chao Phraya, is used to convey water from the Chao Phyara River throughout the Maharat regulator. The height of the left bank enables to feed the adjacent fields and distribution channels by gravity, even when the dry-season river-levels were low. The maximum flow capacity of the Chai Nat - Ayutthaya canal is 75 m3/s. The facility was constructed under the Great Chao Phraya Project along with lateral distribution canal system and drainage system.
