La région de Maroggia est habitée depuis l'Âge du Fer. En 1906, une inscription étrusque du nord a été découverte, suivie d'une stèle de l'époque romaine en 1926. Le roi lombard Liutprand a donné le village à l'église de S. Carpoforo à Côme en 724. Plus tard, il a été transféré à l'abbaye bénédictine de S. Ambrogio à Milan. En 1798, il a rejoint la République éphémère de Riva San Vitale.
Le village appartenait à l'église paroissiale de Riva San Vitale jusqu'en 1644, lorsqu'il est devenu une paroisse indépendante. L'église paroissiale de Saint-Pierre est mentionnée pour la première fois en 1579, mais a été construite au début du Moyen Âge. Le nouveau bâtiment a été édifié en 1640 et restauré en 1982-83. Sur les fondations d'un bâtiment du 16ème siècle, la chapelle de pèlerinage de la Madonna della Cintura a été construite en 1731-66.
