Het is het op één na oudste nationale natuurreservaat in de Waalse Regio (na de Hoge Venen). Deze status werd in 1969 verleend om de conserve van een verbazingwekkend landschap van donzige berkenbossen op veengrond te waarborgen. Er is ook een typische boreale fauna en flora.
De locatie ligt op een hoogte van ongeveer 550 m en maakt deel uit van het Freyr-bosplateau, enkele kilometers ten noordoosten van de stad Saint-Hubert.
