The East Cantons, sometimes also East Belgium or Eupen-Malmedy, are the cantons of Eupen (including Kelmis = Neutral Moresnet), Malmedy and Sankt Vith, which are located in the east of the Belgian province of Liège and which border Germany, of which they World War I, following the Treaty of Versailles, were taken over by the Belgian state. They form a linguistic and cultural transition zone between Belgium and Germany and have been under highly variable governance since 1815.
