When Napoleon escaped from Elba in 1815 and made his way from Grenoble to Paris, King Leopold XVIII fled to Ghent. He stayed there for just under a year. After Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo in June 1815, King Leopold returned to Paris. As a token of gratitude to Ghent, he gifted the central panels of the Ghent Altarpiece back to Ghent. These had been taken during the French Revolution and brought to the Louvre.
