Palace Residence

The Résidence Palace was designed after World War I by the Swiss architect Michel Polak as a luxurious apartment building for the Brussels bourgeoisie and aristocracy. The client, the successful Walloon businessman Lucien Kaisin, had two objectives with the construction of the apartment complex, the largest to date in Europe: to help solve the housing crisis following the Great War and to provide a solution for the acute shortage of domestic staff. Residents of the Residence Palace could rely on maids and butlers who were affiliated with the complex itself. The complex includes not only luxurious apartments but also bars, restaurants, a theater, a swimming pool, conference rooms, a hair salon, a bank, a post office, garages, grocery stores, a flower shop, a chocolate shop... The first residents moved into the Residence Palace in 1927. In 1940, the building was seized by the German occupiers, and after the war, the Belgian State purchased the complex and established government offices in it. Today, the Résidence Palace is the largest press center in Belgium.
