Hooge Crater Cemetery was started in October 1917, when Hoge had fallen into Allied hands at the start of the Third Battle of Ypres. After the armistice, the cemetery was expanded with some 5800 graves from battlefields and smaller cemeteries in the area. Remarkably, the Stone of Remembrance, at the front of the cemetery, is placed in a circular depth: a symbol for the many craters that have been created in the area.
