We are going for a walk along the Waerevaart in Gistel. It was worked on last year as part of the GNOP, the ‘Municipal Nature Development Plan’.
It took quite a while before the works could start, but last year it finally happened. The Waerevaart was widened and the bank was ecologically designed. A gently sloping bank with reeds will not only purify the water but will also become a beautiful breeding habitat for rare river and water birds and an ideal spawning ground for fish. But first, nature needs time to develop into a true reed landscape, of course. Want to know more? Then be sure to come along for the walk.
