The route starts at the Zanddijk cemetery in Dessel but primarily leads through Retie territory.

Retie is known as the 'village of seven brooks', although there are actually more. These brooks spring at the foot of the Kempen Plateau, in the moorlands of Retie's Goor and Laagbroek. Retie is located between the Kempen Plateau in Postel and the foothills of the Kempen ridge.

In Retie, you will hardly find noticeable elevation differences. The brooks wind through the landscape in a flat, narrow bed. The high concentration of brooks and small rivers allows you to easily walk from one brook bed to another.

The subtle changes in terrain lead the residents of Retie to quickly speak of 'mountains'. However, places like Duinberg, Hanenberg, or Berg only rise minimally two meters above the landscape.
