Did you know that the history of De Maten dates back to 1437? The ponds in this beautiful nature reserve have been mentioned by their current names for centuries. No wonder this enchanting landscape is a source of inspiration for landscape painters. Even today, artists and photographers from the Genk art academy still regularly visit this place to capture the magic of De Maten.
The names of the ponds tell special stories. Think of “Het Diep,” a pond that – you guessed it – is very deep, or “De Streep,” named after its elongated shape. And did you know that the “Drijtrap” can drain in three different places? Those who wanted to cut reeds in the past went to the “Soorwijer.” The names make the landscape tangible and give it its own character.
But not everything is as clear ... Why is this nature reserve also referred to by many as “De Duitse Wijers”? It remains a mystery that only adds to the area's charm!
