This route is in honor of the Fossemannen. Here, we follow one of these Fossemannen, Jozef Agneessens. Many residents from Galmaarden, Viane, Herne, and Tollembeek set off for Wallonia in the middle of the last century to work in the mines. They were called the Fossemannen. Pascal Verbeken wonderfully describes it in his book Grand Central Belge: "They were strangers in their own community and strangers in Wallonia." He describes how the resident Jozef Agneessens traveled daily to the coal mine of Monceau-Fontaine No. 14 from Roux-Souvret near Charleroi. He set off at 4 a.m., rode his bicycle to Tollembeek to catch the train there at 4:30. Then, by train via Edingen, La Louvière, Piéton, Trazegnies, and Roux. Then at 6:40 he rode his bicycle to Souvret. At 7 a.m., he was lowered by elevator. Work was done until three o'clock. And then back home. This route roughly follows the path of Jozef Agneessens, but is adapted for the racing cyclist.
