The village lies between the north bank of the Aare river and the south slope of the Mount Gislifluh ), a southern part of the Jura mountains. The partially very steep slope is mostly forested, but exhibits numerous forest meadows.
Auenstein has an area, as of 2006, of 5.7 square kilometers . Of this area, 31% is used for agricultural purposes, while 46.4% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 17.6% is settled and the remainder is non-productive .
