Peace Church

The Peace Church in the center of Barmen, the so-called Gemarke, was the second house of worship built for the Lutheran congregation of Barmen. It was located on the northeastern edge of the Barmer Neumarkt, between Mühlenweg and Großer Flurstraße.
With the industrialization, the number of Lutherans in Barmen increased significantly, not least due to immigration from largely Lutheran Prussia. The Old Church Wupperfeld, being the only Lutheran church in Barmen at the time, became too small for the Lutheran congregation of Wupperfeld, which had grown to around 10,000 believers by 1850. In 1851, the congregation began to think about new church buildings; in 1866, plans for the construction of a large church were abandoned in favor of two new smaller churches in two different peripheral areas of the congregation: the Peace Church in the west, not far from the Reformed Gemarker Church, and the Johanniskirche in the east on the opposite side of the Wupper. The planning of both churches was entrusted to the Berlin architect Hermann Cuno. The Peace Church was the larger of the two and, as the first completed church, had its foundation stone laid in July 1869, and was consecrated on November 29, 1871, just under a year before the opening of the Johanniskirche.
