St. Andrew's Church

The Catholic St. Andrew's Church in the town of Cloppenburg is a Baroque hall building constructed in 1728. It has a capacity of 580 people and is the parish church of the same-named parish, which since 2010 also includes the churches St. Joseph, St. Augustine, and St. Bernard, in the deanery of Cloppenburg.
The church is among the oldest churches in the Oldenburg Münsterland. Its origins can be traced back to the 9th century. It is located in the oldest district of Cloppenburg, Krapendorf. A church was already mentioned in Krapendorf in a document from 819. However, this document from Louis the Pious dated September 1, 819, is now regarded as a complete forgery from the late 10th century. Its origin is believed to be a simple half-timbered church. The foundation of the parish of Krapendorf was initiated by the mission cell in Visbek. After Charlemagne established nine mission districts for the Christianization of the subdued Saxons around 780 AD, the first congregations in the surrounding area were founded from the mission cell in Visbek by Abbot Gerbert Castus – the apostle of the Oldenburg Münsterland. Among these was the parish church Krapendorf in the Lerigau. On October 20, 855, Krapendorf came under the control of the Corvey monastery along with Visbek.
