The cave of Hohlenstein-Stadel was the place where the first indisputable examples of art, and probably religion was found. Here they found the ivory figurine of a 'lion-man'. The body is human, but the head is leonine. A symbol also used by the car manufacturer Peugeot. It was the first proof that the human mind could imagine things that do not really exist. The lion-headed figurine is the oldest-known zoomorphic (animal-shaped) sculpture in the world, and the oldest-known uncontested example of figurative art. It has been determined to be between 35,000 and 40,000 years old by carbon dating of material from the layer in which it was found
