The Holtwicker Egg is a large glacial boulder. It is a landmark of Holtwick, a district of the municipality of Rosendahl in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The granite block, which resembles an egg, was transported about 200,000 years ago as a so-called boulder of the glacial masses during the Saale Ice Age from the Swedish Värmland to the area of today's municipality of Rosendahl. Its weight is estimated to be around 30 tons.
The egg-shaped boulder, which is under nature protection, is embedded in the ground at the northern exit of the district of Holtwick. There, it is located in a small green space in the center of a square that is surrounded by a small wall. Not far from the B 474, the stone protrudes about two meters from the ground; it is believed to be about twice as large underground.
Legends also surround the boulder; for example, it is said that the devil wanted to destroy the church in Holtwick with this rock, but he missed when throwing it, causing the stone to hit the ground and remain partially buried there to this day.
