Branitz Castle

Branitz Castle is a castle located in Branitz near Cottbus in Brandenburg, famous for its park.
The estate belonged to the Counts of Pückler at the end of the seventeenth century. They also acquired Muskau Castle in 1794. Count Hermann von Pückler-Muskau inherited Branitz in 1811 on the death of his father. He married Countess Lucia von Pappenheim, born Baroness von Hardenberg-Reventlow in 1817 and became a prince in 1822. He separated from his wife in 1826, but remained on good terms with her until the end of his life. He laid out the park, and died there. His nephew Heinrich made it an internationally renowned park. Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau is one of Germany's best-known garden designers and landscape architects after Peter Joseph Lenné and Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell. Heinrich Heine, who appreciated this liberal prince, described him as a romantic and original Anacharsis of the most fashionable and a Diogenes on horseback preceded by an elegant groom with a lantern.
