Prince Leopold of Salm-Salm, who lent his name to the later mine in Hervest-Dorsten, negotiated drilling and extraction rights with the mining companies. The royal lord was entitled to one percent of the sales value of the mined coal, which could, however, be redeemed through one-time payments. The drilling was extremely difficult due to the quicksand and could only be done using the freeze drilling method. In 1913, the Fürst Leopold mine produced its first coal with an annual capacity initially set at 39,000 tons. A 900-meter-long track connected the mine with the state railway station Hervest-Dorsten.
