Saalendorf

Saalendorf lies in the southern part of the district at the foot of the Zittau Mountains in the Großschönau Basin and Kuppenland in Eastern Upper Lusatia. The village lies between two forest areas - in the south the Zittau city forest and in the north the Niedere Folge. Saalendorf is crossed by the Fabiangraben, Saalborn and the Badzufluß. To the east is the valley of the Pochebach. To the south rise the Buchberg and the Sonneberg, to the southwest the Hofeberg, the Butterberg and the Lausche, to the northeast the Breiteberg. To the north are the Waldstrandbad Großschönau, the Trixi holiday park and the Goldfabianteich; to the northeast the Pocheteiche.

Saalendorf was laid out in 1557 by the Zittau council on the eastern part of the Waltersdorf field. The founding of the village, which took place ten years after the Upper Lusatian Pönfall, is one of the first village expansions promoted by the city of Zittau. The place name is derived from the Old High German salaha. The first settlers were seven sons of Waltersdorf farmers and gardeners, who bought small meadow plots for 150 and 180 Zittau thalers respectively. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Saalendorf was expanded by a few more houses. Saalendorf always remained a Zittau council village until the middle of the 19th century and was part of the parish of Waltersdorf.
