The village is located on a mountainside in the high plateau of the Franconian Jura at an altitude of 521 m above sea level, seven kilometers northeast of Simmelsdorf.
Due to the administrative reforms at the beginning of the 19th century in the Kingdom of Bavaria, Unternaifermühle became part of the rural community of Großengsee with the Second Community Edict, which also included the parish village of Sankt Helena, the village of Winterstein, the hamlet of Oberachtel, and the isolated farms of Mittelnaifermühle, Obernaifermühle, and Unternaifermühle.
