Schluchtensteig Etappe 2 von Blumberg zur Schattenmühle

The Wutach Gorge adventure begins at the Wutachmühle sawmill. Here, the valley becomes narrower and more jungle-like. Towards the end, the path climbs to the stage finish at the Schattenmühle at the exit of the Lotenbachklamm gorge.

Stairs and small ladders lead from Blumberg through the small gorge of the Schleifenbach stream with its waterfall back to the Wutach. Where today the small stream jumps into the valley, the Feldberg-Danube once flowed from the ice-age Seebach glacier as one of the main source rivers of the Danube. The original Wutach had its headwaters further south, but gradually tapped into the Danube's flow area through erosion over the course of geological history and eventually diverted its waters towards the Rhine. The Wutach is reached again in Achdorf. For a short stretch, the valley is more gentle than gorge-like. If you are lucky and have time, you can watch beavers at work, or at least hear them. After the Wutachmühle sawmill, the landscape changes abruptly. The valley narrows, steep forest and rocky flanks close together. In some places, all that remains for the hiking trail is a narrow ledge between the vertical rock face and the raging river. The Wutach outlet is passed, where the water seeping almost three kilometers upstream gushes impressively out of the mountain - or so one assumes, because the proof is still missing today. The Gauchach flows into the Wutach from the right at the Kanadiersteg. Here you can take a detour into the wild and romantic Gauchach Gorge uphill towards Bräunlingen-Döggingen (railroad station). Rock galleries rise up above primeval forests, the sun shining through the dense canopy far above. An impressive landscape accompanies you on the way to Schattenmühle (bus stop). Depending on your choice of accommodation, you can then take the bus to Bonndorf or Löffingen.
