Temple E is one of the Doric temples of Selinunte and was built around 460 BC . It is also known as the "Temple of Hera" due to its association with the goddess Hera, wife of Zeus in Greek mythology.
The temples of Selinunte are indicated by letters as none of them can be identified with certainty to whom they were dedicated.
Unfortunately, much of Temple E has been destroyed by earthquakes and looting over the centuries.
This is the best preserved temple in Selinunte, although its current appearance is due to the reconstruction carried out in 1959
The temple consists of six columns at the front and fifteen at the long sides, resulting in an unusually elongated structure.
The frieze contains figurative metopes in the frieze dating from about 470 BC and showing the evolution towards the classical style, in particular those representing Zeus and Hera and Artemis and Actaeon.
Next to the Temple of Hera are the remains of a smaller temple (temple F), which may have been dedicated to Athena.
