The Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier is a water barrier, part of the Delta Works. It is also an 8-kilometer long road connection between Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland, part of the N57.
This water barrier is a closable storm surge barrier and contains large sluices that can be closed during heavy storms, either alone or in combination with a spring tide, so that high water cannot enter the Eastern Scheldt. At an expected water level of +3.00 m NAP, the sluices are closed from the control room in the Ir. J.W. Tops building on Neeltje Jans. If no one is present, the sluices will automatically close at +3 m NAP. Since its commissioning in 1986, the sluices have been closed 19 times, apart from test closures.
