In the Netherlands, the Beeldenstorm (Iconoclastic Fury) of 1566 not only led to the destruction of churches and monasteries but also locally to physical violence against Catholic clergy. A clear example of a “lynch mob avant la lettre” is the murder of the 19 Martyrs of Gorkum: Catholic priests and religious who were imprisoned by Calvinist rebels in 1572 and hanged in Brielle for refusing to recant their faith.
The imprisonment in Gorkum took place in June 1572 and the lynching in Den Briel on July 9, 1572.
