The great wetering

The Grote Wetering (also called Groote Wetering or Barrière Wetering) is a mainly dug watercourse in the Dutch province of North Brabant, the headwaters of which are formed by the stream of the same name that has its source area east of Nistelrode in the Maashorst Nature Park.
The course flows almost entirely in a westerly direction and still takes up the Kleinwijkse Loop, the Graanloop and the Venloop and ends up in the Aa via the Zandvang east of 's-Hertogenbosch. The westernmost part is also a buried stream bed. The length of the watercourse is about 12 km.
The watercourse was probably dug in the 13th century by monks from Vinkel who belonged to the wilhelmite order and had ties with the Baseldonk monastery in 's-Hertogenbosch. That is why the Grote Wetering used to be called Monniksgraeve.
