The old waterway with magnificent poplars on both sides is referred to as the most beautiful walking path in Zeeuw-Vlaanderen! It is located in a relatively unknown part of West Zeeuws-Vlaanderen at the border between Aardenburg (NL) and Sint-Laureins (BE). The waterway was dug in 1300 for the transport of peat. The peat was extracted near Eeklo and transported to Aardenburg. At that time, peat served as fuel as wood became increasingly scarce and the population grew. Numerous residual waters flow into the waterway, such as the Oude Biezenkreek and the Valeiskreek, which meet in the Groote Gat, as well as the Kruiskreek and the Blokkreek. These coasts were created by the floods of 1583, giving the Eekloosche waterway a semi-natural character. After the peat transport, it was mainly used for grazing cattle. The entire area is 26ha large and is managed by Staatsbosbeheer.

The Eekloosche waterway is not accessible to dogs and is located in a grazing area; so please keep your distance from the animals.

The hike cannot be done in a loop, but it is so beautiful and inviting that a round trip is definitely worth it.
