The Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital is located in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA and is the oldest and largest public health care system in the state. The current location of the city hospital opened on December 7, 2013, less than 1,300 feet to the west of the original campus.
The hospital was founded as the Indianapolis City Hospital in 1855 in response to a smallpox epidemic in the city. During the Civil War, the hospital was used by the Union Army to treat soldiers. The hospital reverted to community control after the war.
