Niel es un municipio en la orilla derecha norte del Rupel. Antiguamente, había muchas ladrilleras aquí. Ahora que esa industria ha desaparecido, la naturaleza poco a poco vuelve a dominar muchos lugares abandonados y en canteras de arcilla. Así se ha formado la reserva natural Walenhoek. Cerca de Niel puedes tomar el ferry hacia Wintam, conocido por sus áreas naturales y la gran esclusa que conecta el Escalda con el Canal de Bruselas-Escalda.
