Sunderland is een city in het bestuurlijke gebied City of Sunderland, in het Engelse graafschap Tyne and Wear. De stad telt 177.739 inwoners, en is gelegen aan de noordoostelijke kust van Engeland.
De grote trots van Sunderland is de plaatselijke voetbalclub Sunderland AFC en speelt tegenwoordig haar wedstrijden in het Stadium of Light. Sunderland was speelstad bij het WK voetbal van 1966. De wedstrijden werden gespeeld in het 1997 afgebroken Roker Park.
