To enter the Royal Shrine of the Santísimo Cristo de La Laguna you have to pass under the Portico del Christo . Regarding the antiquity and importance of the Portico of Christ, we must go back to 1506, when the construction of the temple began .
In September 2013, the portico of the Royal Shrine was restored . Now the portico of the Cristo de La Laguna offers an image as in the past, without the ivy and with walls plastered and painted white as always, the shape of the pinnacles and the color of the stone at the top of the three doors of the arches. The structure of the lattice door of the central arch, with two wings, is made of iron and decorated with wrought iron.
In the past, "there was a very bad habit of performing a Danza de Cohetes at the moment when the procession passes through the entrance arch to the outer courtyard of the former monastery."
The "Danza de Cohetes" ( dance of the rockets ) is a traditional and spectacular event in Spain, especially known in the Canary Islands, including Tenerife. It is part of the festivities in which fireworks and flares are used in a kind of choreography, often during religious or cultural celebrations.
