Statue José Tabares Bartlett - La Laguna

Tabares Bartlett is one of the best poets of the 19th century realism of Canarian poetry.

He was a lord in the chamber of Alfonso XIII and commander of the order of Charles III. The Royal Economic Association of Friends of the Country of Tenerife appointed him vice-director in December 1892 and honorary member in 1918. He was repeatedly mayor of La Laguna and provincial deputy.

Strongly influenced by the poem Canarias by Nicolás Estévanez, Tabares Bartlett's poetry adopts the features of the island landscape and the sketches of the barren and desolate horizon that will lead to the pinnacle of the island poetic art of his time. Some of his poems were a poetic sketch about the conquest of the Canary Islands, and a romance (1881); Poems (1896) and Rhythms (1918). The poem La Caza, written in 1907, is considered by critics to be one of Tabares Bartlett's best.
