Le Hérou is a rock face of 1400 meters in length that runs almost vertically up along the Ourthe in Nadrin in the Belgian province of Luxembourg.
Around 1913, the Brussels professor Chargeois described a first hiking trail around the site and later, on behalf of Touring Club, he developed a whole network of local hiking trails in the region around Nadrin and Le Hérou in 1923 and 1924. Maurice Cosyn, who mapped out the first long path of the Ourthe, later published a tourist guide on Nadrin and Le Hérou, with 16 hiking trails of 3 to 16 km.
Very soon there were hotels and a viewing tower (Hotel Belvédère) and at that time the hoteliers actively cooperated to create and maintain the paths. Since the 1920s, Le Hérou has been put on the map as one of the highlights of a visit to the Ourthe valley. The passage along Le Hérou and the viewing tower was already included in the route of the first hiking trail of the Ourthe in the 1930s.
The viewing tower of Hotel Belvédère from which one could see the six bends of the Ourthe is closed in 2018 and the hotel is dilapidated.
