Rellinghausen is a district in the southeast of the city of Essen. In 1996, the former women's convent Rellinghausen celebrated its thousand-year anniversary.
The earliest part of the area was probably called Ruoldinghus or Ruodlinghus. The place Rellinghausen, which was named Rellekhusen in Lower Frankish after 860, developed from a noble court of the married couple Eggihard and Rikilt, which was located approximately at today's Stiftsplatz. A familial relationship to Altfrid, the founder of the convent in Essen, meant that the noble court was likely financed by a share of the Essen tithe. Rellinghausen was exempt from the tithe grant made by Archbishop Gunthar of Cologne. Starting in 943, the tithe, known as Jakobsgeld, was given to the Abbey of Werden every July 25th, until the abbey was dissolved in 1802. In a document from King Otto the Great in 947, Rellinghausen is mentioned as a daughter parish of Werden.
