Zarrentin Monastery

The Cistercian convent in Zarrentin am Schaalsee was founded in 1246 and dissolved in 1553. The building houses a permanent exhibition in the cloister that is directly related to the convent and its history.
In 1246, Countess Audacia and her son, the later Count Gunzelin III of Schwerin, established a Cistercian convent and endowed it with 60 hooves of land in the area of Neustadt-Glewe - Wöbbelin - Grabow. However, they initially found no suitable location for the convent building until 1251, when the opportunity arose to exchange the convent's possessions for a knight's seat and eleven hooves in Zarrentin and the surrounding area, and to move the convent to the Schaalsee. In 1252, Bishop Friedrich of Ratzeburg confirmed the foundation of the convent and placed it under the protection of the apostles Peter and Paul. In 1253, Pope Alexander IV granted the convent the name Himmelpforte in a letter of protection, but this name did not prevail and fell into oblivion.
