The Museum for the Principality of Lüneburg was a museum in Lüneburg focusing on the history of the Principality of Lüneburg. In addition, there were exhibitions on other topics, including the history of the Lüneburg salt works.
In 1878, the Museum Association for the Principality of Lüneburg was founded, among others by Georg Keferstein, who campaigned in the following years for the establishment of a museum for local history. With financial assistance from the landscape of the Principality of Lüneburg, the museum building was constructed from 1889 to 1891 according to the plans of the architects August Friedrich Heithaus and Ferdinand Münzenberger on a plot of land provided by the city of Lüneburg. The museum opened in 1891. The foundation of the collection was the teaching materials collection of the Lüneburg Knight Academy, which closed in 1850.
