Prisoner of War Camp Büderich

The prisoner-of-war camp Büderich was the northernmost of the so-called Rheinwiesenlager.

The camp was established by Americans starting April 20, 1945, for German soldiers who had been taken prisoner. The camp, approximately 90 hectares in size, was located on the Meerfeld on the outskirts of Büderich, bordered by the then long-distance road 58, the Boxteler Railway, and the Haltern–Venlo railway line, the Borth salt mine, and the town of Büderich. It was surrounded by barbed wire.
Unprotected, around 80,000 prisoners of war had to live in the open field until the camp was dissolved on June 15, 1945, and the prisoners were marched to the Rheinberg camp.
